Teens jiu jitsu / mma
grappling foundation program for 11 - 16 year olds
timetable 2024
Term 4 starts Monday, 7th October 2024
10th Planet Jiu Jitsu South Melbourne introduces its Jiu Jitsu and MMA program designed for 11 - 16 year olds.
Following the Victorian school terms, our programming focuses on grappling fundamentals with a blend of mixed martial arts instruction designed to build confidence, life skills, self defence and awareness training in a fun and safe environment within our academy.
Our experienced Coaching Team will guide and teach your child valuable skills while developing their self esteem and physical fitness. Our programming holds a strong focus on team work and discipline that will help shape them into confident young adults able to take any challenge on in life.
what does the program involve?
The Teens Program is fundamentally based around the 10th Planet grappling system. Students will learn jiu jitsu without the use of a traditional kimono uniform (the ‘gi’) and will learn within the 10th Planet system which is developed entirely as clinch based grappling, rather than relying on tugging on clothing which can be unrealistic from a self defence perspective. Elements of practical and effective MMA techniques are built into the program syllabus.
What is great about jiu jitsu?
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or BJJ is one of the fastest growing martial arts in the world. Both gi and no-gi jiu jitsu are fantastic to learn and utilise leverage over an opponent as opposed to size and strength. However; with the 10th Planet style being the only dedicated no-gi system, this is adapted for when strikes become involved and is better for the street and self defence situations. 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu is a dynamic style with both offensive and defensive positions based off of clinching another human being.
what is great about mma?
MMA or mixed martial arts combines techniques taken from various styles of martial arts from a practical perspective, making it versatile for different situations. Skills taught in MMA involve striking, clinching, grappling, wrestling and submissions, preparing individuals for both standing and ground encounters. Through MMA training, students learn to stay calm under pressure while building confidence, discipline and physical fitness.
class information
Classes in the Teens Program are designed for children aged 11 - 16 years old and follow a syllabus structure of learning. Each class runs for one hour which involves movement drills as part of a warm up, specific to the movements students will perform during class. During class, the instructor will teach a technique or a series of techniques in line with the syllabus, where students will then practice with each other, their training partners. This will be followed with practice and drilling, and at the instructor’s discretion of live rolling or sparring.
10th Planet South Melbourne follows the Victorian school calendar for terms.

Teen Program classes run on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:30pm - 5:30pm.

faq’s & considerations
Can I watch my child train? Parents are welcome to watch their child train during class in our Reception area and remain off the mat during class.
Can I photograph / film my child training during class? 10th Planet South Melbourne carries a very strict No Filming of an Underage Person Policy. It is at the instructor’s sole discretion during session and footage must not include any other student.
Will my child get ‘graded’? Yes! This is an important part of their progress to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding and be recognised for their hard work. We celebrate our students’ achievements through grading sessions throughout the year.
Does my child need to wear a ‘uniform’ during class? Students will be required to wear mat appropriate attire for training - this is a rashguard and / or shorts / leggings / pants free of pockets, buttons or zippers. 10th Planet South Melbourne sells gear in-house and can recommend suppliers.
My child can’t make each weekly session during the term, can they do ‘make-up’ sessions? Our Teens Program runs twice a week, following a syllabus to ensure consistency in their development. We do not offer make up sessions and expect students to be in their regular classes.
During class instruction, it is important for parents to understand that the instructor is able to lead and coach students without interruption from the sidelines as this can be disruptive to students’ learning and growth.
Our coaches are highly trained and experienced in teaching and providing an ideal training environment for your child.
